Everyone’s talking about Devin Harris’s incredible game-winning shot to beat the Philadelphia 76ers. Well here’s the video of the desperation half-court heave by the All-Star. Ridiculous concentration by Harris to get the shot off after Andre Iguodala stripped (or fouled) the ball away from him. Check it out yourself:
During last night’s win over the Blazers, Celtics’ star Kevin Garnett totally ripped into Boston’s bench in the 4th quarter for allowing Portland to cut a 25-point lead in half, forcing the starters back into the game. Glen ‘Big Baby’ Davis took exception to KG’s words I guess and………cried. Here’s the video evidence (and you’re welcome worldstarhiphop.com for giving you a free plug):
First of all, let me just get this out of the way and say I can’t believe he was crying. I mean, you’ve played with KG for more than a year now so you know what he’s all about whether you like it or not. You sucked while you were on the court and couldn’t hold a 25-point lead to a team that played terribly that night. The truth hurts sometimes and I don’t mean Paul Pierce. Take it like a 6’9 300 pounder. And you’re on national television. Have some pride dude. Some classic stuff by Gabe Pruitt also. It seemed like he wanted to laugh so bad but didn’t want to blow up Davis’s spot. Great job, Gabe.
Finally, at 300 lbs, you might think Davis is the biggest crybaby on earth (literally) but that distinction still goes to Manny Wright, formerly of the Miami Dolphins. The 6’4 345 pounder broke into tears after then head coach Nick Saban tore him a new one.
This is a few days old but funny nonetheless. Devin Harris tried to save a ball from going out of bounds and in doing so, fell on the Laker Girls. If only we could all be so lucky.
Yi Jianlian finally showed what he’s capable of against Miami. Yi busted out for 24 points on 7-11 shooting (including 5-6 from long distance), grabbing 10 boards, and dishing out 4 assists. He was shooting a dismal 36% from the field before last night’s game so it was nice to see him at a good percentage. The problem is, most of his field goals were still from jumpers, but he did get to the line 6 times so that’s a good sign. Hopefully he can be more aggressive and take the ball to the bucket some more. If Yi can become a star in the league, I think that will increase the Nets’ chances of getting LeBron greatly.
PERFORMER OF THE NIGHT
TJ FORD
40 MINS 24 PTS 7 REBS 10 ASTS 2 STLS 1 BLK 2 TOS 10-19 FG 2-2 FT 2-2 3PT +16 +/-
Despite outstanding efforts from Paul Pierce, Kevin Durant, and Dwight Howard, I’ll go with TJ tonight as the little guy not only had a 20/10 game but also grabbed 7 boards and even blocked a shot (only the 19th of his career) in leading his team to victory.
ROOKIE OF THE NIGHT
OJ MAYO
44 MINS 33 PTS 3 REBS 5 ASTS 3 STLS 0 BLKS 2 TOS 12-23 FG 6-6 FT 3-8 3PT -3 +/-
Another great game for the 21 year-old Mayo. He’s really coming into his own and so far, is the top rookie this season. I wonder who the man is in Memphis, Mayo, or Rudy Gay?
PATHETICNESS OF THE NIGHT
NICOLAS BATUM
19 MINS 1 PT 2 REBS 1 AST 1 STL 0 BLKS 0 TOS 0-1 FG 1-2 FT 0-1 3PT -10 +/- 5 FOULS
Tough game for the rookie from France. He is starting for the Blazers which is impressive, but it just wasn’t his night.
When the Nets traded Richard Jefferson for Yi Jianlian and Bobby Simmons, it signaled giving up on not just this season, but the next as well in order to be in a position financially to make a run at LeBron James in 2010. They weren’t very good last year and will be even worse this year.
Never gets old.
Face of the Franchise: Vince Carter. But for how long? There were already rumors the Nets were shopping VC this offseason but decided against shipping him off. He is getting up there in age and I can’t imagine him being in their long-term plans. Unfortunately he has three years left on his contract at about $16 million per year with a team option for a fourth so it will be tough to find a taker for him especially since everyone is trying to make room for that vaunted 2010 free agent class. But for now, Vinsanity is still one of the top talents in the league and will be counted on to lead this team.
This either.
Send Him Away: Vince Carter. It’s gotta be Vince. If they want to sign Devin Harris to a long-term extension then there is no way they can afford Harris, Vince AND LeBron.
Future teammates?
Impact Newcomer: Yi Jianlian. This youngster from China was brought in possibly because of the large Asian population in the tri-state area. But he may also be a selling point to LeBron when they try to sign him in two years. It is no secret LeBron wants to become a “global icon” and that plan begins with China. LeBron James is marketed heavily in China (a special colorway is created for each of his signature Nike sneakers, the only country this is done for) and coming off his gold medal in the Beijing Olympics, his popularity in the country has never been at a higher level. The Nets will do everything they can to turn Yi into a star so they can sell to LeBron the potentially enormous cross-marketing possibilities the two can have. Yi is a skillful player who can certainly turn into a star in his own right (after all, Yao Ming did say Yi would be better than him) but perhaps his (and Jay-Z’s) biggest role with the Nets will be in bringing LeBron James to New Jersey (or Brooklyn).
X-Factor: Devin Harris. The cornerstone in the deal for Jason Kidd, the new floor general for the Nets needs to play well in order for his team to have any kind of respectability. He has gotten better every year but he needs to bring his “A” game every time he steps on the floor. If he does, he’ll get that lucrative long-term contract and possibly a chance to be LeBron’s sidekick.
Forecast: High Lottery. The Nets will be terrible this season. And they will probably be terrible next year too. But if that means landing LeBron James in 2010 (and two high draft picks along the way) then I’m sure Nets fans will quickly forgive them.
